I know, I know where's the new album? When its finished you'll have it, I love making beats, rhymes and the whole nine yards, but there are other things I like to do as well. Been messing around with this iPhone and seeing all these cool apps to download from the Apple Store. This inspired me to go ahead and make one of my own. Now you have to have a Developers license from Apple. Love action games and throwback 2D Street Fighter style joints. Whoever gets the opportunity to play one of my programs will be in for a treat. Although I’m not a seasoned programmer there’s a few surprises up the sleeve. I’ll keep you posted.

I have to let you know exactly what inspired me to do what I do today and give high respect to the founding fathers. I could write a whole book about the history of these brothers, but today I’m going to give you a brief lesson.

It began in 1973 A.D. the physical location was the housing complex at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. DJ Kool Herc (aka Clive Campbell) laid the foundation of Hip Hop music by backing up breaks in a record using two turntables to prolong the beats to rock a party. Herc brought his sound system, the Herculords, which was the loudest system in the park. DJ Kool Herc began formulating a new language of expression that would eventually cross all borders of the planet. The man set it off.

Afrika Bambaataa a DJ and community leader from the South Bronx. He's also known from his breakthrough group, the Soul Sonic Force. In the early ‘70s Bam ran a gang in New York. Coming through that unharmed, Bambaataa decided to use his leadership to turn those involved in the gang life into something more positive to the community. Bam is the founder of the Zulu Nation, the single most enduring institution in Hip Hop. Zulu Nation STANDS FOR: Knowledge, Wisdom, Understanding, Freedom, Justice, Equality, Peace, Unity, Love, Respect, Work, Fun, Overcoming the Negative to the Positive, Economics, Mathematics, Science, Life, Truth, Facts, Faith. Inspired by DJ Kool Herc, Bambaataa was organizing block parties around the South Bronx. “Nobody had more records than Bam.”, Grandmaster Flash told one interviewer.

Grandmaster Flash (Joseph Saddler) is the FIRST DJ to make the turntable an instrument. Flash was intrigued with the possibilities the technology surrounding music suggested for innovation. The concept of cutting – the backbone of Hip Hop Djing came out of his laboratory (with assistance from his friend Grand Wizard Theodore another great who created scratching) Flash’s introduction of the “Beat Box” was a wired drum box into a mixer. When the music would stop from the record, Flash would come in with the drum box so you couldn’t tell where the music stopped and Flash started. This turned DJs from beat mixers to beat makers and building blocks of rapping as we know it were laid.

Look, if it was not for the DJs nobody would know what time it is. To me the DJ is the gatekeeper of sound on the street. Respect the DJ for giving the soundtrack to most peoples lives. Like to give shouts to the Furious Five, Jazzy Jay, Busy Bee, Kurtis Blow, Kevi Kev. -Distrakt Know the history on a culture that has united all types of people from around the world. Corporate entities have distorted the origin of Hip Hop. Hip Hop is not all about thugs, drugs, disrespect of women, who’s got the shiniest jewels and wheels. It’s much bigger than that. DISTRAKT – KRS ONE – GHETTOBLASTER

One of my homeboys was over today and he asked me “Distrakt do you still play this Ghettoblaster? They don’t make cassette tapes anymore man!”. I looked at him and said “now you going to have to sit down for a session with my Ghettoblaster and me”, so I pulled out one of my favorite comic books and cartoonist Kyle Baker. With the comic book accompanied a cassette tape by one of the greatest emcees today KRS ONE as Big Joe Krash. Based on KRS One’s music, the comic tells the story of a rapper named Big Joe Krash that strives to educate the young African-American kids in his neighborhood. You follow the tape with the comic book and it’s a beautiful experience. I love sharing it with the seeds from time to time. After my cohort read and followed the tape, I played him some of my new beats and rhymes off the new album. He was buggin, because he said “now that sounds like some straight up Hip Hop that you just don’t hear anymore” and then tried to get a copy. Of course I said in due time fam. I like to transfer my beats and rhymes to tapes and listen to what it sounds like coming off a real boom box, because that’s how I heard Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, Rakim, BDP, Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh , Ultramagnetic MC’s, Keith Elam, Public Enemy, Marley Marl & the Juice Crew All Stars for the first time and many others. Fell in love with Hip Hop that way and that’s how I keeps the love. Scratch is one of my favorite magazines. Really missed these joints. Had great articles and tips that was priceless. When I heard they where no more a dude was crushed, because this was a magazine that felt genuine and spoke clearly to the beat makers from a novice to a high power level. It had crazy science yawl. Mean look at who was on the cover from Dr. Dre, Premo, Rza, Kanye, Neptunes I mean just look. To all you up and coming producers, you ever get the opportunity to read any of the old issues you won't be sorry. Gives you the opportunity to get your game tight. You could have any machine with high power features, with crazy connectivity and software integration with your Mac or PC, but none of it would work without a mutha#@*!&% WIRE! Wire's the nervous system for any pre-production or professional recording studio. Now great wire's not cheap. You could pay $100 for one cable or a $100 for eight cables. There's all types of brands out there to choose from with whatever color or texture you like, for me underground Hip Hop producers can't always afford that top quality joint. That's why you're seeing a dude use a more affordable grade of wire called Hosa™ that's plugged into the EMU SP-1200. DISTRAKT - PARKOUR TRAINING

Been exercising lately and trying out new things like Parkour training. This gets my blood pumping. What made me pick this up was a few things: Jackie Chan has always been one of my favorites, this movie called District 13 with Cyril Raffaelli and David Belle (these dude's serious with it), what made me actually start messing around with it was when I was stumped on a beat and rhyme. I was so frustrated about this track I was working on that I had to get the heart rate moving, so I started jumping off a few things. At work mixing down a joint. Making sure the mixdown is hard body, because if it's a poor mix, mastering can't do anything for it. It’s all in the mix.
